• How to Clean Up After a Sewage Backup
    By: Benjamin R.
A sewage backup in the home is not only foul smelling and nasty looking. It can be dangerous, as well. Raw sewage contains pathogenic microbes that can sicken—even kill—people. It must, therefore, be cleaned up quickly and completely.

The first thing to do is to solve the problem that caused the blockage. In some cases, the homeowners can handle such a job themselves. A plunger or home sewer snake can dislodge minor blockages. But large blockages may require calling a plumber, who will unblock the drain line with a commercial grade sewer snake or a hydro-jet machine. Chances are, however, that the plumber will not offer to clean or disinfect the mess. The homeowners will need to deal with it themselves or call a professional cleaning service.

To save money and time, the simplest way for a homeowner to clean up after a sewage backup is to prepare a cleaning solution that contains one cup of bleach for every five gallons of water. This should kill almost any pathogenic microbes on the surface of the bathtub, sink, toilet, or floor. But it can be dangerous in itself. Bleach can cause breathing problems, skin irritation or burns, even unconsciousness. It should never be mixed with any other cleaner, as a deadly gas can form. Bleach can also discolor some surfaces, although that would not be the primary concern when dealing with a sewage backup.

So the homeowners should wear old clothing with long sleeves and long pants. Gloves are recommended, too. Wearing a face mask and eye protection such as that used for carpentry or other home repair is also a good idea.

Use the solution to clean anything with which the sewage has come into contact. Some items should be thrown away, such as baby toys or food items. Even mattresses should be disposed of if they came into contact with sewage-polluted water. It’s better not to take a chance on health problems.
If diarrhea, fever, chills, or vomiting occur in anyone who has come into contact with the sewage, that person should see a doctor to head off any serious complications.
